In a city generating 400 tonnes of waste daily with only 20-25% being properly managed, Clean Kisumu General Investments Ltd is pioneering sustainable solutions that are reshaping Kisumu’s waste management landscape. Here are five innovative ways we’re making a difference:
1. Eco-Friendly Collection Methods
Gone are the days of pollution-heavy waste collection. Our handcart system not only ensures efficient waste collection but significantly reduces carbon emissions. Serving over 1,100 households and 30 businesses, our approach proves that sustainability and efficiency can go hand in hand. Our carefully planned routes maximize coverage while minimizing environmental impact.
2. Strategic Recycling Partnerships
We’ve established strong partnerships with major recyclers including Mr. Green Africa, MILLYGLASS, Kibos Paper, TakaTaka Solutions, and Circo Company. These collaborations ensure that recyclable materials – from HDPE plastics to glass and paper – find new life instead of ending up in landfills. Through these partnerships, we’re not just collecting waste; we’re feeding the circular economy.
3. Revolutionary Waste-to-Energy Solutions
Our innovative briquette production program transforms organic waste into sustainable fuel sources. These eco-friendly briquettes provide local communities and industries with an affordable alternative to traditional fuels, directly contributing to reduced deforestation and lower carbon emissions. It’s a perfect example of turning a challenge into an opportunity.
4. Community Education and Engagement
We understand that lasting change requires community participation. Our regular awareness programs and environmental campaigns educate residents about proper waste management practices. Through these initiatives, we’re building a more environmentally conscious community and ensuring the sustainability of our efforts.
5. Creating Local Employment Opportunities
With 21 employees and plans to expand to 50 by 2026, we’re not just managing waste – we’re creating sustainable employment opportunities. Our team members receive proper training and support, contributing to both environmental sustainability and economic growth in Kisumu County.
Looking Ahead
As we work toward our goal of managing 40% of Kisumu City’s daily waste by 2025 and achieving a 50% recycling rate, these five approaches form the foundation of our strategy. By combining innovative solutions with community engagement and environmental responsibility, we’re setting new standards for waste management in Kenya.
